Machu Picchu Rules: What to Check Before You Enter

Updated

Check Machu Picchu rules for passports, entry times, guides, bag size, prohibited items and re-entry, with a practical checklist before your visit.

Quick answer

  • Match your ticket, identity document, visit date and route before traveling.
  • Article 17.1 recommends guide accompaniment for llaqta entry; trek and package conditions are separate.
  • Use a small day bag and check restricted equipment before leaving your accommodation.
  • Plan transport and toilet stops without assuming late admission or re-entry.

Before Machu Picchu entry, match your issued admission with your official identity document, then check the date, entry time, assigned route and current prohibited-item rules. A train ticket, tour request or preferred circuit is not proof that site admission has been issued.

The current Article 17.1 wording recommends guide accompaniment for llaqta admission; it is not a universal guide mandate. Separate that rule from your package’s agreed guiding service and from Inca Trail authorization. Resolve document, equipment and route questions before heading to the entrance.

Machu Picchu rules: your gate checklist

Article 17.1 requires an entrance ticket and official identity document for llaqta admission. Compare the issued record with the document you will carry and follow your booked date, time and route. Train and bus confirmations serve separate journeys and are not site admission.

Read the issued admission, not just your package name. Compare visitor details with ID, date, slot and circuit. If your group holds different routes or times, confirm whether you can walk together.

If admission is still requested or unissued, treat the desired slot and route as unconfirmed. For a party holding different routes or times, ask what can be coordinated without assuming shared access or a circuit change. Route choice belongs to the circuit comparison; issuance questions belong to the ticket guide.

  • Check visitor details against the identity document you will carry.
  • Read the site entry time separately from train, bus and guide meeting times.
  • Confirm circuit and any additional mountain access before departure.
  • Resolve document or equipment questions before joining the entry queue.

Is a guide required at Machu Picchu?

Article 17.1, as amended by Ministerial Resolution 000334-2026-MC, requires an entrance ticket and official identity document for entry to the llaqta and recommends accompaniment by a tourism guide. ‘Se recomienda’ is a recommendation, not a universal guide requirement. This provision concerns llaqta admission; do not assume it determines the separate Inca Trail authorization conditions. Confirm conditions for your ticketed route and circumstances.

Before you travel, ask the official ticket channel or your operator to confirm the current requirement for your exact route and date. Ask for the instruction being applied, rather than relying on an old headline or another visitor’s experience. A guide can add historical explanation and help coordinate the permitted route even when independent admission is possible.

A guided package also has its own agreed meeting point and itinerary. Whether a standalone visitor needs guiding is a different question from whether guiding is included in your booking. Ask about language, meeting location, route coverage and what happens if transport is delayed. Use our guided versus independent comparison for the service decision.

Inca Trail arrangements should be checked separately from ordinary citadel admission. Do not assume that guidance about independent site entry answers trekking permit or escort questions. Start with the Inca Trail permit guide and request the conditions for the particular trek you intend to book.

Passport at entry: match your booking

Reported entry guidance from Salkantay Trekking, Ticket Machupicchu and TreXperience requires an identity document associated with the visitor’s ticket. For international visitors, prepare your original passport and confirm that the booking details match. The acceptable document can depend on nationality and ticket category; check your own conditions before you go.

Compare your name and document details before payment and again when the issued ticket arrives. If a passport has been renewed, a number entered incorrectly or a student category selected, contact the issuing channel for written instructions. Do not assume that carrying an old document, a photograph or an explanation will automatically resolve the mismatch.

If your passport is lost, treat entry acceptance as a separate issue from obtaining emergency travel documents. Ask the ticket issuer what replacement evidence it can accept and whether any correction is possible. Our passport booking guide and lost passport action plan explain the questions to raise. Do not send sensitive document images in an initial general enquiry.

Keep your original booking document with you during the visit rather than leaving it with luggage.

Entry time rules and late arrivals

TreXperience reports that the ticket has a specific entry time and that late visitors may be refused admission. Check the current rule for your slot; there is no dependable universal grace period established by the sources reviewed here. Build your transport plan around the site entry time, not the other way around.

Allow room in your schedule for reaching Aguas Calientes, finding the bus boarding point if using the bus, waiting in line, meeting your guide and checking documents. These are planning tasks, not guaranteed journey times. Ask your operator to distinguish the accommodation pickup, train departure, guide meeting and site admission times in the written itinerary.

If a connection is delayed, contact your operator or the issuing channel as soon as practical and ask site staff about the available options. Do not assume a later ticket slot, another circuit or a replacement admission will be offered. Read our missed entry time guide before a tight connection becomes an urgent decision.

Bag size and prohibited items

The official Machupicchu code of conduct reports a bag size limit of 40 × 35 × 20 cm, also repeated by several competitors. Check the current limit before you go and measure the packed bag, including bulky outside pockets. A bag described by a shop as a daypack is not automatically within the reported dimensions.

That code reports restrictions on food and kitchenware, alcohol, aerosols, weapons, umbrellas, portable chairs, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, drones and baby strollers. It also lists walking sticks and animals, with a guide-dog exception. Check the current version rather than assuming that small size, folding equipment or a personal-use purpose creates permission.

If you need a mobility aid, essential medical food or another item connected with a disability or health condition, ask the site authority about an exception before travel. Describe the actual item and need, and request instructions for the checkpoint. A general packing blog cannot authorize access, and an operator’s reassurance should not replace confirmation of the site procedure.

Arrange larger-luggage storage separately and confirm availability and conditions; free storage or gate availability is not promised. Use our Machu Picchu packing guide for clothing and day-bag preparation.

Time limit, circuits and mountain tickets

Reported visiting guidance links the permitted route and visit period to the admission type. There is no single time limit that safely describes every Machu Picchu visit. Check your actual ticket conditions before you go rather than applying a duration from a different circuit or a social-media trip report.

A general site admission should not be read as permission to change circuits, retrace the whole route or enter a mountain trail. Ask which viewpoints, archaeological areas and additional walks your selected route covers. Our ticket guide and Circuit 2 comparison help frame that choice without replacing the ticket’s instructions.

For Huayna Picchu or another additional walk, confirm the checkpoint, timing, permitted route and eligibility conditions. Ask whether your guide accompanies that walk or only the archaeological circuit. The tour’s total duration is not your admission allowance.

Re-entry, bathrooms and food

Inca Trail Machu, TreXperience and Inca Rail report that ordinary re-entry is not allowed. Plan as though leaving ends that admission unless the current conditions for your exact ticket explicitly provide another procedure. Check before you go; a mountain-related checkpoint arrangement should not be interpreted as general permission to leave and return.

Plan a toilet stop before entering and confirm the location of the facilities you intend to use. Do not assume that you can leave for a bathroom and return on the same admission. If a medical or family need makes this important, raise it in advance and ask staff for instructions before leaving the route. See our Machu Picchu bathroom guide.

The official conduct list reports that food and kitchenware are prohibited. Eat before your visit and ask about the current rules for drinking water and containers rather than assuming every bottle or thermos is permitted. Essential medical nutrition needs should be discussed before travel. Do not rely on a packing article recommending snacks as evidence that food is allowed inside.

Behavior, photos and accessibility questions

The official conduct list reports prohibitions on leaving marked circuits, touching or climbing structures, removing natural or stone material, feeding animals, littering, smoking or vaping, running and disruptive noise. Follow staff directions and keep the route clear. Check the current code before travel, particularly if you are arranging an unusual activity or carrying specialist equipment.

The official code also reports restrictions on heels, hard-soled shoes, costumes and advertising clothing. Check current clothing requirements before you go.

For ordinary phone photography, keep attention on the path and do not block narrow sections. The reported code restricts virtual-app use in narrow paths and outside explanation areas, as well as photography stabilization equipment and drone flights. Do not assume a professional shoot, promotional clothing or special event is covered by ordinary visitor admission; ask about permission first.

The official conduct extract reports expulsion without reimbursement and possible legal action for violations. This is not a prediction of what will happen in every case, and we do not quote a fine or promise a refund. If staff question an item, ask calmly what procedure applies rather than trying to conceal it or relying on another visitor’s admission.

For access needs, explain the person’s walking ability, required equipment and support needs before choosing a route. An itinerary marketed as easy does not by itself settle stairs, resting opportunities or aid permissions. Use our accessibility planning guide to prepare focused questions instead of treating a broad equipment list as individualized access advice.

Final checks and help planning your visit

Before departure, review your issued admission, identity document, connections, guide arrangements and bag. Save contact details for unresolved ticket questions. Confirm changes in writing: a preferred route is not proof that admission has been issued.

For itinerary help, compare the same-day train proposal and two-day train proposal. Ask which admission, guiding and transport services a dated quote would cover; a proposal is not proof of issued access.

Already have tickets? Share the route and slot, not passport scans, in your first message. Ask about planning around existing reservations. Review our tour inclusions checklist. Enquiries do not guarantee availability, admission changes or rule exceptions.

  • Have admission issued, not merely requested.
  • Check your passport and ticket together.
  • Confirm your meeting point and transport connections.
  • Ask about medical or mobility equipment before traveling.
  • Resolve document mismatches, oversized bags and entry-time questions before leaving for the site.

Machu Picchu Rules: What to Check Before You Enter: FAQ

Is a guide required at Machu Picchu?

Article 17.1, amended by Resolution 000334-2026-MC, recommends accompaniment by a tourism guide for llaqta admission. A recommendation is not a universal guide requirement. Check separate conditions for your ticketed route, organized service and any Inca Trail segment.

What passport do I show at entry?

Reported guidance asks for the identity document associated with the ticket. Prepare your original passport if that is your booking document, check the details and ask the issuer about renewals or corrections. Do not assume a phone photograph is an accepted substitute.

What if I miss my Machu Picchu entry time?

TreXperience reports that late admission may be refused. Contact your operator or ticket channel and ask staff about your options. Do not rely on a universal grace period or assume a transport delay guarantees another entry slot.

What bag size do Machu Picchu rules allow?

The official conduct list reports 40 × 35 × 20 cm as the maximum bag dimensions. Check the current limit before traveling, measure your packed bag and arrange larger-luggage storage separately without assuming gate availability.

Can I bring food or water?

The official code reports a food and kitchenware prohibition. Check current drinking-water and container requirements before packing, and ask ahead about essential medical nutrition. A recommendation to carry snacks in a general packing article is not entry permission.

Are trekking poles or baby strollers allowed?

The official code lists walking sticks and strollers among prohibited items. If you need an aid for mobility, request current exception procedures before travel; do not assume folding poles or rubber tips alone guarantee acceptance.

How long can I stay at Machu Picchu?

Reported guidance makes visit time dependent on the route and admission type. Read your ticket’s current conditions, including additional mountain access where relevant. The duration of a train tour or guided package is not the same as your permitted time inside.

Can I leave Machu Picchu and re-enter?

Several visitor guides report no ordinary re-entry. Plan toilet and meal stops before admission and verify any special procedure for your exact ticket. Do not assume leaving for a bathroom creates a right to return.

Can I use my phone or fly a drone?

The supplied conduct code reports drone restrictions and limits disruptive app use in narrow paths or outside explanation areas. For phone photos, follow staff directions and keep the path clear. Do not assume ordinary admission permits professional filming or restricted camera supports.

Does an enquiry change my ticket’s circuit or entry conditions?

No. A planning enquiry cannot amend admission, authorize restricted equipment or grant late entry. Ask the issuing channel or site authority about the procedure applicable to your ticket.

Do the ordinary citadel guide rules decide Inca Trail authorization?

No. The llaqta recommendation and trail permit and operating requirements are distinct. Verify both if your journey contains an Inca Trail segment.

Still have a question?

Send dates, party size and the relevant route or booking details, without identity documents, QR codes, medical information or payment data. Ask what is confirmed and what needs checking; this enquiry is not a reservation.
