Machu Picchu Passport Requirements: Booking and Renewal
Updated
Check Machu Picchu passport requirements before paying: original ID, matching names, renewal scenarios and separate checks for tickets, trains and permits.
Quick answer
- For most international visitors, book with passport details and plan to carry the matching original; confirm any alternative ID for your nationality and status.
- Before payment, check every traveler’s name, document type and number, nationality and birth date against their own document.
- If renewal changes the number, distinguish an old passport you will retain from one you must surrender; ask each issuer which procedure applies.
- An entrance-ticket correction does not automatically update a railway reservation or Inca Trail permit.
- Start an enquiry with your visit date, party size, document status and affected services—not passport scans or numbers.
Machu Picchu passport requirements are about identifying the named traveler on an entrance ticket. For most overseas visitors, the practical starting point is a passport: check its details before payment and plan to carry the accepted original on the day. The Ministry of Culture’s public buying guide lists DNI, foreign-resident identification and passport as documents in the official process; it does not mean every visitor can choose any of them.
Renewal is the situation that needs the most care. A new passport number, a cancelled old document and a misspelled ticket are different problems. Work through the relevant scenario below before buying or relying on an issued booking. Peru’s border-entry requirements, Machu Picchu admission, train boarding and trail permits are separate checks—not one permission granted by a tour quote.
Which identity document can you use to book Machu Picchu?
The Ministry of Culture’s government service page lists DNI, carnet de extranjería and passport, together with an email address, for the Tu Boleto purchase process. Follow the official service link rather than judging a seller by a search advertisement. For international passport travelers, prepare the passport you intend to present; for national-ID or residency cases, verify eligibility for your specific status before selecting the document category.
The account holder or person paying is not necessarily every ticket holder. Collect each traveler’s details separately, including children. An adult’s document cannot identify everyone in the party. Ask the seller to show the proposed passenger data before it issues personalized services; see the official-ticket buying guide for route and checkout decisions.
- Confirm the accepted document type for each traveler and ticket category.
- Review the full legal name, complete document number, nationality and birth date.
- Check the visit date, route and entry time without confusing these with identity details.
- Obtain the issued entrance ticket—not only a payment receipt, reservation acknowledgement or tour quote—and check its QR code, traveler details, visit date, route and entry time.
Passport unchanged, renewal pending or ticket already issued: what next?
Before booking during passport renewal, confirm the document procedure for each affected service. If a ticket is already issued, ask its issuer to review any changed passport number or legal name. Explain whether you will retain the old original, whether it will be cancelled and when the new passport will be available.
- Current passport, no renewal expected: check eligibility, copy details carefully and review the issued confirmations.
- Renewal pending, old original retained: ask whether both originals are accepted and whether an approved update is still necessary.
- Renewal pending, old original surrendered: explain that it cannot be presented; seek an approved alternative or consider waiting for the new passport before buying the affected service.
- Ticket already issued with a mismatch: contact its issuer promptly for a same-traveler case review and check other services separately.
- Passport lost during travel: use the lost-passport guide and confirm replacement-document acceptance before continuing.
How should names and passport numbers match the ticket?
Use the identity-page details, not a nickname or the name on the payment card. Compare letters and digits one at a time: zero and O, or a transposed pair of numbers, are easy mistakes. Check the date format before entering a birth date and avoid swapping given-name and surname fields.
For multiple surnames, accents, a long name or a form that cannot fit the document spelling, ask the issuer how that specific system records the name. Do not arbitrarily remove a middle name or assume a formatting difference will be ignored. Send the original spelling through a verified channel, then review the actual output.
For dual nationals, establish which accepted document is attached to each reservation and which original you will carry. A passport used for a border journey need not automatically be the document recorded by every supplier; disclose any difference and obtain instructions rather than assuming another passport proves the booking match.
Can you book with an old passport and bring both passports?
Several operators recommend carrying both old and new originals after renewal. That is useful advice to ask about—not a universal admission guarantee. Before buying, confirm that your passport authority will return the old original, whether it will be cancelled, and what the ticket issuer requires for the same traveler with a changed number.
Ask the ticket issuer whether the booking record must be updated and confirm the admission authority’s or carrier’s requirements for presenting old and new passports. If a both-passport procedure is confirmed for that service, carry both originals and the written instructions. A seller’s reply does not override the requirements of the authority or carrier controlling entry.
Do not use a cancelled passport as your valid border-travel document. If the renewal also changes your legal name, describe that separately: replacing a document number and changing identity details are not interchangeable requests.
What if the old passport is surrendered or unavailable?
Tell every affected issuer explicitly that you cannot present the old original. A copy of it, a renewal receipt and the new passport should not be assumed to solve the match. Ask whether the service can be issued using the new document later, whether an update is available, and what evidence the responsible authority will accept.
If the service is not booked and no acceptable procedure is confirmed, consider waiting until the new passport is available before buying that service. This avoids guessing a future number, but availability and prices may change while you wait. Request realistic choices rather than a guarantee that seats or permits can be held.
If already booked, request a case review as soon as possible. Before authorizing a replacement purchase, establish whether it is required, whether a suitable ticket is available and which costs or terms apply. The ticket changes and refund guide owns those remedies.
Can a passport-number typo or legal-name error be corrected?
Whether a mismatch can be corrected depends on the current procedure and the type of change. Contact the issuing seller—or official support for a direct purchase—promptly. Specify whether the issue is a typing error, passport renewal for the same traveler or a legal-name change, and provide the booking reference and supporting evidence through a verified channel. Do not edit the ticket PDF yourself.
The evidence needs careful interpretation. The Ministry’s 2018 published regulation included an exception for changing a passport number; the platform terms linked below describe a passport-number material-error exception. Neither establishes automatic approval for every renewal, a legal-name change or passenger substitution. Ask which rule applies and how the current procedure handles your specific case; do not infer a fee, deadline or turnaround from historical guidance.
Ask separately whether a passport-number typo, renewal-related number change, name typo or legal-name change is permitted; approval for one does not establish approval for another. Obtain a corrected confirmation or instructions from the responsible issuer. A same-traveler correction is not a ticket transfer. See the changes guide for cancellation and replacement decisions.
Does your passport need six months of validity for Peru?
Entering Peru is a separate check from buying Machu Picchu admission. GOV.UK’s entry guidance, expressly scoped to full British citizen passports, says the expiry date must be at least six months after arrival in Peru. That is not evidence of a separate six-month Machu Picchu rule or a rule covering every nationality.
Check the immigration or consular guidance for your nationality and document, plus airline and transit requirements. Count validity from the relevant arrival date, not the date you buy a ticket. A successfully issued attraction booking is not permission to board an international flight.
If the passport is damaged, has been reported lost or stolen, or is being replaced after a legal-name change, resolve travel-document validity before making non-refundable purchases. An old cancelled document may help explain a booking history only where accepted; it is not a substitute for valid travel permission.
Do children need their own ID, and is student proof separate?
Prepare each child’s own accepted identification and review the individual booking details. A parent’s passport does not replace the child’s identity record. Ask how the entrance ticket, railway and any other booked service handle infants or children; do not assume one supplier’s policy applies to the whole itinerary.
Identity evidence and discount evidence serve different purposes. A student booking may need qualifying original university documentation in addition to a passport or another accepted ID. Do not select a rate just because you have a school card, a digital card or ISIC; check the student-discount guide for that separate decision.
Parental consent, residency and permission for a minor to cross borders are wider travel questions. Check the applicable official and carrier requirements for the child’s circumstances rather than treating an attraction ticket as proof that those requirements are met.
Do train tickets and Inca Trail permits need separate updates?
Yes—treat each reservation as its own record. A Machu Picchu entrance-ticket change does not automatically update PeruRail, Inca Rail or a trail permit. Ask the actual railway carrier or issuing seller about its boarding documents and correction procedure. For an Inca Trail or Km 104 itinerary, ask the permit-issuing operator to verify the trail-authority requirements.
List the services in travel order and mark which are issued: transport to the station, railway, trail access if included, bus transport and site admission. A rail seat is not an Inca Trail permit, and a tour description is not proof that all named services have been issued. Use the booking-document audit for a whole-trip reconciliation.
For a day tour from Cusco or a two-day train itinerary, request the written document checklist for the product you are considering. Assistance coordinating checks does not give an operator special authority to approve a mismatch.
- Entrance ticket: document recorded, visit details and applicable correction instructions.
- Railway: actual carrier, reservation data and boarding-document requirements.
- Trail permit, if included: named traveler, permit confirmation and current document procedure.
- After any approved change: read back the revised record for each affected service.
Which original documents should you carry on entry day?
Plan to carry the original accepted ID associated with the reservation and keep issued tickets accessible offline. Copies and photographs are useful recovery backups; do not rely on them as your entry document. For a renewal case, carry the additional documents specifically required by each issuer.
Keep the originals with you rather than in luggage stored in Cusco or a hotel safe. Protect them from rain and keep a separate backup copy. Check the visitor entry rules before packing, and avoid unofficial souvenir stamps in the passport; use a notebook instead.
If an original is lost, contact the relevant authority and suppliers promptly. GOV.UK warns British travelers that some transport companies will not accept a police report alone. That warning is a reason to obtain service-specific confirmation—not a universal statement that a report can never be accepted.
- Accepted original identity document for each traveler.
- Entrance and transport confirmations saved offline, with printed backups if useful.
- Original qualifying discount proof when required for the booked category.
- Renewal or correction evidence required by each responsible issuer.
What passport information should you send before paying?
Start with non-sensitive context: visit date, party size, preferred itinerary, whether services are issued and whether a passport is current or being renewed. You do not need to put a passport number or scan into the first enquiry below. The aim is to find the correct next step, not collect identity files before checking who you are dealing with.
Before providing data for issuance, verify the seller and booking contact independently. Ask why the requested information is needed, who receives it and how to transmit it securely. Do not post identity pages in a public group or send them to an unverified payment request. We do not assume a secure-upload service is available; ask what channel the seller actually provides.
Request a final passenger-data review before issuance and check the confirmation promptly afterward. The booking information page provides the wider booking context; payment and cancellation terms still need to be confirmed for your specific purchase.
- Visit date and number of adults and children.
- Document status: current, renewing with old original retained, or renewing with old original unavailable.
- Booking stage and affected services: entrance, rail or trail.
- A clear question about what must be resolved before payment—without scans or document numbers.
Which sources support these passport checks?
The linked sources separate the official buying process, ticket terms and historical context. The Ministry’s buying guide lists document categories; the platform terms include specified exceptions. A 2024 proposed-regulation announcement is historical context, not a current correction workflow. A fresh check of a guessed terms-page URL returned a not-found page, so it is not cited as authority here.
GOV.UK’s cited entry guidance applies to full British citizen passports. Confirm current renewal, correction, railway and trail-permit requirements with the relevant authority or carrier, using the issuer to coordinate any booking update.

Ask on WhatsAppMachu Picchu Passport Requirements: Booking and Renewal: FAQ
Do I need a passport to book Machu Picchu?
Most international visitors should prepare their passport details. The government buying page lists passport, DNI and foreign-resident identification; verify which document is accepted for your nationality, status and ticket category.
Can I use a passport photo instead of the original?
Plan to carry the accepted original recorded on the booking. A phone photo or photocopy is a backup, not a replacement to rely on for admission. Ask the responsible issuer about any exceptional case.
Can I book while my passport is being renewed?
Explain whether the number or name will change and whether you will retain the old original. Confirm the procedure for each affected service before buying; if no workable procedure is confirmed, consider waiting for the new document.
Will both my old and new passports guarantee entry?
No. Carrying both passports does not guarantee Machu Picchu admission or transport boarding. Confirm whether each service requires a booking update and whether its admission authority or carrier accepts both originals. A cancelled passport is not a valid border-travel document.
What if my old passport is surrendered during renewal?
Tell the issuer that the old original will be unavailable. Ask about an approved update or specified alternative evidence; do not assume an old scan or renewal receipt will suffice.
What should I do if the passport number on my ticket is wrong?
Contact the issuer promptly for a same-traveler correction review. Do not edit the ticket file. Obtain a revised confirmation or applicable instructions and check railway or trail reservations separately.
Are passport-number changes always prohibited?
Do not assume a universal prohibition or automatic approval. The linked platform terms describe a passport-number material-error exception; that does not automatically approve renewal, name changes or passenger substitution. Ask the issuer for the applicable procedure and decision.
Is six months of passport validity a Machu Picchu rule?
The GOV.UK guidance discussed here requires full British citizen passports to expire at least six months after arrival in Peru. That is a border-entry requirement within that guidance’s scope, not evidence of a separate Machu Picchu admission rule. Check the requirements for your nationality, document, airline and transit journey.
Does my child need their own identity document?
Prepare each child’s own accepted ID and individually accurate reservations. A parent’s passport does not identify the child; confirm each service’s requirements separately.
Will an entrance-ticket correction update my train or Inca Trail permit?
No—not automatically. A Machu Picchu entrance-ticket correction does not automatically update a railway reservation or Inca Trail permit. Ask each railway or permit issuer to verify its record and document requirements separately.
