Machu Picchu Circuit 2: Compare 2A and 2B Before Booking
Updated
Compare Machu Picchu Circuit 2 routes 2A and 2B, classic viewpoints, ticket booking, walking demands and train timing before choosing your entrance slot.
Quick answer
- Circuit 2 is the classic archaeological circuit: separate Routes 2-A and 2-B.
- Published maps show a Lower Platform 1 spur on 2-B, not 2-A; neither blue line reaches Upper Platform 2.
- Both reviewed route PDFs print a maximum stay of 2 hours 30 minutes; confirm current ticket conditions.
- Map labels are not interior-access permissions, and a Circuit 2 ticket does not include a mountain extension.
Machu Picchu Circuit 2 is the classic archaeological circuit, sold as Route 2-A (Ruta diseñada) and Route 2-B (Ruta Terraza Inferior). On the published Ministry maps, 2-B includes a spur to the lower platform that is not shown on 2-A. Both maps print a maximum stay of 2 hours 30 minutes. Neither blue route reaches the upper platform.
Choose 2-B if the mapped lower-platform stop is a priority; otherwise compare each authorized path and available entry time. These are published map distinctions, not live availability or a guaranteed photograph. Buy the exact route code and coordinate transport around your issued admission, not a generic “classic Machu Picchu” tour label.

What does Machu Picchu Circuit 2 include?
Circuit 2 combines agricultural terraces with a walk through the Inca city’s urban sectors. The Ministry lists it as Machupicchu Clásico. Its two route codes authorize specific paths, not free movement throughout Machu Picchu or an additional mountain climb.
Read the blue walking line and direction arrows on the official 2-A map and official 2-B map, reviewed on 24 October 2026. Black numbered labels identify places, blue information symbols mark explanation areas and orange hut symbols mark control posts. The presence of a landmark in the legend does not mean the ticket enters it.
The maps label the Sun Temple lookout, Temple Plaza, Intiwatana pyramid, Sacred Rock, Twelve Doorways, Eastern Storehouses, Water Mirrors complex, Condor Temple and Pisonay Plaza. These are archaeological reference points, not a blanket list of accessible interiors. In particular, the Sun Temple label identifies a lookout, not admission to the temple’s interior. Follow the marked route and any restrictions in force.
Route 2A vs Route 2B: which classic circuit should you choose?
The Ministry route list names 2-A “Ruta diseñada” and 2-B “Ruta Terraza Inferior.” The published 2-B map includes a blue-line spur at Lower Platform 1; 2-A does not show that spur. The blue lines also differ near marker 4, Mirador del Templo del Sol; compare that alignment without treating the label as permission to enter the temple. Neither blue route reaches Upper Platform 2, even though both platforms appear in both legends.
Choose 2-B for its mapped lower-platform alignment if that stop matters to you. If it does not, compare the two mapped paths and entry times that actually fit your visit. Neither is a premium upgrade or permission to switch paths; reports that guards treat the codes alike do not change your ticket’s authorization.
For photography, match your reference image to an authorized viewpoint rather than relying on a generic booking-page photograph. The maps do not guarantee an exact camera position or composition. Cloud, light and visitor controls affect the result; use the Machu Picchu photography guide for that specialist decision.
- 2-A: Designed Route; its published blue line does not include the Lower Platform 1 spur.
- 2-B: Lower Terrace Route; its published blue line includes that spur.
- Both published maps: maximum stay of 2 hours 30 minutes, not a guaranteed walking duration.
- Neither blue route: Upper Platform 2, a mountain extension or unrestricted monument access.
How do you buy Machu Picchu Circuit 2 tickets and compare costs?
Use the Ministry’s official sales platform or a transparently identified operator purchasing admission for you. Select the date, 2-A or 2-B, entry hour and eligible traveler category. Compare the final payable total, separating admission from agency fees, guiding, buses and trains.
Reach the platform through the official Machu Picchu website, not an official-sounding commercial domain. For the full purchase process and dated payment guidance, see the Machu Picchu ticket guide.
Save the issued admission document and check its date, route, entry hour and required identity details. An enquiry, quotation or payment receipt alone is not proof that a specific admission has been issued. Agree how you will receive the ticket before arranging dependent travel.
- Check date, route code, entrance hour and traveler category before payment.
- Compare the issued name with the document you will carry.
- Separate admission, guiding, bus and rail in the quote.
- Save the issued ticket and agree where to meet your guide.
How long does Circuit 2 take, and how difficult is it?
Both the 2-A PDF and 2-B PDF print “Tiempo máximo de permanencia: 2 h y 30 m”—a maximum stay of 2 hours 30 minutes. This is the allowance in the maps reviewed on 24 October 2026, not confirmation that operating conditions will be unchanged on your visit date. Check your issued ticket and current Ministry instructions.
The published maps establish the maximum stay, not a typical walking duration or a target pace. Commentary, photographs, visitor flow and individual mobility affect the walk; agree a plan that remains within the applicable limit. Transport, shuttle queues, entrance checks and luggage collection need separate time. Do not assume a three-hour archaeological walk is permitted.
Circuit 2 is not a mountain ascent, but it involves stairs, gradients and uneven stone. Wet surfaces can make footing more demanding. Neither route is step-free, and a lower platform does not automatically mean easier walking. Discuss knee pain, balance concerns and pauses before booking; the senior-traveler guide covers the fuller mobility decision.
What is the best entry time, and how should trains and buses fit?
The best Circuit 2 entry time is one you can reach comfortably with your confirmed travel arrangements. An overnight stay in Aguas Calientes supports early entry; a same-day journey from Cusco needs enough margin for rail arrival, walking, the shuttle queue and gate checks. No slot guarantees sunrise, clear skies or solitude.
Early visits can mean cooler conditions and an early start, but mist may obscure views. Later slots may fit arriving trains better, yet weather and crowd patterns are variable. Choose according to the whole itinerary instead of assuming the first ticket is always the best photographic or logistical choice.
Plan the Aguas Calientes shuttle connection separately from the site visit. The drive is only part of the approach; buying ahead does not necessarily remove the boarding queue. Tell your guide whether you are arriving by rail that morning or already staying in town.
For the return, work backward from the railway reporting deadline. Add the archaeological exit, downhill queue, drive, luggage collection and station walk. An apparently generous gap can disappear if you count only guided walking and ignore these tasks. A two-day tour by train can reduce same-day pressure, depending on the actual schedule.
- Outbound: rail arrival, station exit, town walk, shuttle queue, drive and entrance checks.
- At the site: guide meeting, authorized walk and photography within current conditions.
- Return: exit, downhill queue, shuttle, any luggage collection and station reporting.
Is Circuit 2 better than Circuit 1 or Circuit 3?
If you are still choosing between panoramic, classic and royal-sector experiences, use the three-family circuit comparison. Circuit 2 is the classic archaeological option; this page’s detailed decision is 2-A versus 2-B, not a universal “best circuit” ranking.
Choose Circuit 1’s panoramic routes when elevated views or a specified panoramic-side hike are your main priority. Compare Circuit 3’s royal-sector routes for its lower-sector and designated hike options. Each route has distinct conditions; another family is not an upgrade to Circuit 2.
Circuit 2 does not include Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, the Sun Gate or the Inca Bridge as automatic extensions. Direction arrows toward those places on a map are orientation references, not additional permissions. A guide cannot turn your issued Circuit 2 ticket into mountain access.
What can you do if Circuit 2 tickets are sold out?
First check both 2-A and 2-B and any entry times compatible with your travel. Then consider another date or a different circuit whose actual scope suits you. Another ticket is not an equivalent classic-route substitute.
Use the sold-out ticket alternatives guide for contingencies and the circuit comparison before accepting a different family. Local sales and commercial last-minute offers are not confirmed admission; avoid nonrefundable transport based only on an unissued promise.
The Short Inca Trail from Km 104 is a separate trek, not a Circuit 2 rescue ticket. It requires its own permits and itinerary. Ask which archaeological route is actually included and when; do not assume it delivers Circuit 2 access.
What should you check before entry and meeting your guide?
Confirm your meeting location and contact arrangements before leaving for the entrance. Check whether your guide meets you in Aguas Calientes or at the gate, and how you will recognize each other. Do not assume the person arranging admission will also accompany you on the bus.
Carry the identity document required by your issued booking and check that the details match. Review the current Machu Picchu entry rules and packing guidance before deciding what to take. Confirm current bag, food and walking-aid restrictions rather than relying on a previous traveler’s experience.
Ask about current guiding requirements when booking. A guide can explain the site and help you follow the authorized route, but cannot guarantee access to a closed area. Check toilet arrangements before admission and do not plan an exit and return unless current ticket conditions expressly allow it.
What should a direct-booking quote confirm before you pay?
A useful quote states the proposed route code, date, entry hour, guide meeting arrangements and transport legs. It distinguishes issued admission from availability checks and itemizes the payable services. A tour name alone does not establish Circuit 2 access.
Send an enquiry with your intended date, traveler count, viewpoint priorities and walking concerns. If you already hold admission, include its issued route code and entry hour plus any booked train arrival and departure times. Do not send passport copies or payment details in this initial enquiry.
Compare a day tour with a two-day rail itinerary for itinerary fit. Neither listing establishes that Circuit 2 is included. This enquiry is not a reservation; exact admission, guiding and transport need separate confirmation.

Ask on WhatsAppMachu Picchu Circuit 2: Compare 2A and 2B Before Booking: FAQ
What is Machu Picchu Circuit 2?
It is the Classic circuit, combining agricultural and urban sectors with views of the Inca city. It is sold as two separate routes, 2-A and 2-B.
Is Circuit 2A or 2B better?
On the official maps reviewed on 24 October 2026, 2-B includes a spur to Lower Platform 1 that is not shown on 2-A. Choose 2-B if that stop matters to you; otherwise compare the mapped paths and compatible entry times. Neither blue line reaches Upper Platform 2, and neither route is automatically better for everyone.
Can you take the classic Machu Picchu photo on Circuit 2?
Circuit 2 should not be booked on the assumption that it includes the upper-terrace postcard viewpoint: neither published blue route reaches Upper Platform 2. The 2-B map includes a spur to Lower Platform 1 that is not shown on 2-A. If your reference image depends on the upper terrace, compare Circuit 1’s panoramic routes before buying. Exact camera position, composition and visibility are not guaranteed.
How long can you stay on Circuit 2?
Both official route maps print a maximum stay of 2 hours 30 minutes. This is the allowance in the PDFs reviewed on 24 October 2026, not live confirmation for a future visit. Check current ticket conditions; it is not a guaranteed walking duration. Allow separate time for entrance checks, bus queues and onward transport.
Does Circuit 2 include Huayna Picchu or the Sun Gate?
No. Those are separately designated route experiences, not automatic additions to Circuit 2. Confirm the relevant ticket, seasonal rules and physical demands before booking.
Do you need a guide for Circuit 2?
Verify the current guiding requirements with the Ministry or your operator before travel. A guide is useful for interpreting the site and managing the authorized path, but is not automatically included with admission.
Is Circuit 2 suitable for children and older travelers?
It may suit travelers who can manage uneven stone and stairs at a controlled pace. Discuss specific mobility needs beforehand; it is not a step-free route just because no mountain climb is included.
What if Machu Picchu Circuit 2 tickets are sold out?
Check both 2A and 2B, then other suitable times or dates. Another circuit may suit your priorities, but is not an equivalent classic-route ticket. Do not rely on an unconfirmed gate upgrade.
Are bus transport and a guide included with Circuit 2 tickets?
Do not assume so. Ask for an itemized quote separating archaeological admission, guiding, buses and trains. A commercial tour may combine services, but its exact inclusions and meeting arrangements need confirmation.
How early should I book Circuit 2 tickets?
Check availability once your travel dates are known. No fixed lead time guarantees a ticket; confirm the route and hour before committing to dependent transport.
Where can you find the official Circuit 2 maps?
Use the Ministry 2-A PDF and Ministry 2-B PDF, linked by the official route list. Read the blue walking line separately from the numbered landmark labels. Check for updated maps before booking.
Does Circuit 2 include the upper terrace or every temple interior?
Neither published Circuit 2 blue route reaches Upper Platform 2. A monument shown in the map legend does not guarantee interior access. The Sun Temple marker identifies a lookout; follow your issued route and current restrictions rather than interpreting labels as entry permissions.
Can you switch between 2-A and 2-B after entry?
Do not assume so. Book and follow the exact issued route code. Reports of shared visitor flow or guards treating routes similarly do not authorize switching paths, adding a platform stop or entering another circuit.
Still have a question?
Share your date, traveler count, viewpoint priorities, walking concerns and any issued ticket or train timing. Do not send passport copies or payment details. This enquiry does not reserve admission.
